Question by : What type of binoculars is good for planet-viewing?
I’d like to purchase binoculars, though I know very little about them. What binoculars should I purchase? I’ve seen in a website 20-100×70 one, and 25-125×80 one, weighting 1.5 kg. At what magnification level will I be able to see Jupiter’s moons, Mars, Venus and such? More information about it would be appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by Mike
Most astronomers will recommend that you avoid the -zoom- style binoculars you appear to have been looking at.
A decent pair of 10×50 roof porro binoculars will let you see Jupiter as a disk, and its 4 Galilean moons as small ‘stars’ nearby. Mars will be visible as a very small disk, and if you pay close attention, you can see the phases of Venus (when it looks like a crescent, or even a gibbous moon).

If you spen a little more, a pair of 15 x 50 or even 20×70 will be great for astronomical viewing, but they become heavy enough that you cannot comfortably hold them while viewing overhead for extended times – - you would need to consider getting a tripod.
Once you look at getting a tripod to hold your binoculars, you really may as well consider getting a ‘real’ telescope – such as a 4” to 6” dobsonian mounted reflector. This won’t be very useful for terrestrial viewing (it takes a special person to bird-watch with a telescope that makes everything look upside down…) but would be much better than the zoom binoculars for astronomy.

An instrument used for research and joy. Scientists use binoculars to study the sky, birds, insects and other things. There are people who use binoculars to enjoy a baseball game better or to watch a soprano belt out a piece in an opera. And coastguards and soldiers use binoculars to help them perform their duties better. So, people own binoculars for several reasons.

Among the common uses of binoculars are:

1. While exploring exotic destinations. Many tourists are never without their binoculars which they use to see objects and splendorous scenes up close.

2. For opera and theater. Often seats in a theater are right at the back or way up in a balcony. Theater goers use operatic glasses to view happenings on stage up close.

3. Music jamborees and outdoor theater festivals. A binocular can be invaluable in a huge crowd. One can see the whole show up close even standing or seated miles away.

4. Binoculars are great for camping. The glasses allow you to view wildlife and nature from up close. Ever seen a mountain goat standing across a valley?

5. Sky gazing. If watching celestial dramas are your cup of tea then a binocular is your best friend. You can watch shooting stars and more seated on your roof top, lying in a bobbing boat or from atop a mountain. A binocular will bring the sky within touching distance provided it is a powerful one.

6. Ever watch a game from the field? Well a binocular can bring you close to a flying ball even if you are seated right on top of the spectator stands. Sports buffs use binoculars to watch baseball and other games from up close.

7. For tracking game. Hunters and trackers use binoculars to track game while hunting with rifles or cameras. So if you are planning to ride down rapids, trek through deserts, or forests a binocular especially one with night vision can be your best friend.

8. If you are in the coastguard or army. Binoculars help you guard better and even lend night vision.

There are many innovative uses for binoculars and since their discovery binoculars have been friends of man.

Question by jondalar469: In a pair of binoculars, is there a way to get more light through the same sized exit pupil?
The exit pupil diameter is normally found by dividing the diameter of the objective lens by the power of the instrument. But there ought to be a way to get more light through the instrument without changing the exit pupil diameter. Maybe a preamplifier optical instrument that has a larger objective, which feeds the binocular objective from its own exit pupil?

Is there such an instrument? Would it be possible to make such an instrument?

Best answer:

Answer by Larry G
The answer to your question is currently “No!”

Your idea of a “preamplifier” is interesting, but it too is doomed to the reality of optics.

Say you had a 100 inch objective, with a 2 inch exit pupil. That would mean the “preamplifier” was working at 50x. If you put a 10x50mm telescope (binocular) behind the preamplifier, you will indeed get an exit pupil of only 5mm, but you have pushed the magnification of the system up to 500x!

However photo-multiplier tubes have been used for years to increase the light amplification, with some degree of added noise. A better solution would be for a wide-band (visible spectrum) LASER (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) to actually amplify incoming photons at their individual wavelengths. Unfortunately, no such creature exists at the moment.

Fuji G-617 Panoramic Camera – A film camera that is Great for Landscape Photography…

www.clickherephotographytips.com The Fuji G617 Panoramic camera is an absolute pleasure to own and to use, although it does have a few teething problems This camera was first developed in Japan by the Fuji Photo Film Company in 1982 and has the ability to take print or transparency film images at a size of 6cm x 17cm which look amazing on a light table and much better when you see a print hanging on your wall. The camera accepts film that is generally used in Medium Format cameras like Hasselblad, Rollei etc and is a larger sized film than the traditional 35mm film that many photographers were using before the invention of digital photography. I do not feel that digital photography will result in the demise of film photography, at least not for sometime Moving On The camera accepts two sized of film, actually the height of the film remains the same, it is actually the number of photographs available that really makes the difference. For example, on a roll of 120 sized film as a photographer you are limited to four shots per roll, and; on a roll of 220 film you are limited to eight shots per roll. To purchase this camera new can be expensive, film is expensive to purchase and so are costs involved in processing and printing. But, for some reason I keep coming back to this camera mainly as a result of the quality of the images. They are simply outstanding Admittedly, the camera is generally not used in everyday photography unless of course you are a professional

Question by John S.: If you saw a stranger outside your place of business with binoculars & taking photos, what would you think?
In this scenario, the stranger is taking photos of the entrance and back exit of your business place. Also assume that yours is a fast food restaurant or a retail establishment and that you are an employee there or even the manager. What would you think this stranger was up? And what would you do, if anything, noting that anyone can use binoculars and anyone can take photos of a public building?
At the writing of this addendum, four people have already responded that the activity looks suspicious as if a burglary were being plotted which is what I thought most people would think. I will reveal that this is what certain secret auditors are called on to do for quality control purposes to insure the merchant is keeping their property clean, their service friendly, their product competitive, and their prices in line with policy. But the secret auditor may look like a spy which is why I believe such secret auditors need to be better protected with insurance and legal support from the auditing company who hired them in the event merchants make obvious assumptions, call the police, and someone’s identity gets mistaken for the lastest neighborhood burglar or terrorist.

Question by redheat: If you had to fish with a yahoo pro who would it be and where would you fish?
I know I asked this before but since more people will be coming on the hell with it
First of all I will take Chad and his family to visit Pheasants tail and we will be flyfishing with pigeons tails on our head.
While they are busy I will go fishing with givemename and FisherKing to check out the bikini contests in FL and bass/alligator fish all day
When they are asleep I will stop by Backwater Charlies place and fish/spear carp for the remainder of the night and well drive all the way down to visit Art. Before we fish we will pick up Brandon in Tequila Mexico for some good old whiskey and fish in the Pacific for a few days.Nathan S will tag along and bring binoculars and the tackle for fishing and checking out the scenary.

Art will drop us off at the airport and then will visit FishSteelhead and head out to the river to catch his lunkers that he has been saving us all year long
Josh and Trigger will distract them while I sneak away to fish with Injun. Well be heading to the Lousiana forest to catch crawdads and lunker catfish. Wormist and GrandMaster will drive us to Texas and will fish for some Bass with Texasjig.

By that time anyone else that I forgot to mention will find out and well all fish together.

Well hell, you’ve just about covered it — but can you really imagine meeting up with all these tournament pros, guides, and “ole fishermen” and tripping with them for a few days each? Fishing in twenty different places on both oceans, in the Bahamas, in all manner of warm Southern lakes and rivers, sweating it out in the Bayous, fly fishing in the West, ice fishing in the Midwest, carp fishing in UK canals, pier fishing for God-knows-what, casting from every kind of watercraft with every kind of lure and bait and rod, and what about that guy T-Bone in Florida who catches all the sharks and has those great photos on Flickr!? Not to mention what you could learn about other fishing-related skills like boating and fly tying. Steelhead, big Alaska rainbows, redfish, walleye, wipers, stripers (and the occasional stripper), northern pike, eels, halibut, salmon in all their varieties, marlin, big-ass bass (smallmouth, largemouth, spotted, black, peacock, etc. etc. etc.), tuna, hand-sized bluegill, monstrous catfish, maybe an octopus or two, LOTs of crawdaddies, funky Florida exotics… and that’s BEFORE the exaggeration you add in after you get home.

I mean if you just took the top 10ers in the Fishing section and fished, say, 3 days with each one — just in their native habitat, nothing outrageous — can you even imagine what a month that would be? The mind boggles.

EDIT: Wormist, regarding the second idea in your answer… maybe try fly fishing ok and good luck on the idea.
